چکیده

Triangle inequality violations (TIVs) are the effect of packets between two nodes being routed on the longer direct path between them when a shorter detour path through an intermediary is available. TIVs are a natural, widespread and persistent consequence of Internet routing policies. By exposing opportunities to improve the delay between two nodes, TIVs can help myriad applications that seek to minimize end-to-end latency. However, sending traffic along the detour paths revealed by TIVs may influence Internet routing negatively. In this paper we study the interaction between triangle inequality violations and policy routing in the Internet. We use measured and predicted AS paths between Internet nodes to show that 25% of the detour paths exposed by TIVs are in fact available to BGP but are simply deemed “less efficient”. We also compare the AS paths of detours and direct paths and find that detours use AS edges that are rarely followed by default Internet paths, while avoiding others that BGP seems to prefer. Our study is important both for understanding the various interactions that occur at the routing layer as well as their effects on applications that seek to use TIVs to minimize latency.

Internet Routing Policies and Round-Trip-Times

Round trip times (RTTs) play an important role in Internet measurements. In this paper, we explore some of the ways in which routing policies impact RTTs. In particular, we investigate how routing policies for both intraand inter-domain routing can naturally give rise to violations of the triangle inequality with respect to RTTs. Triangle Inequality Violations (TIVs) might be exploited by overl...

Impact of Path Performance on Concurrent Multipath Transmis- sion within Routing Overlays

Routing overlays aim to accomplish some of the anticipated advanced routing features of the Future Internet [1]. First, they are expected to achieve higher reliability than the current Internet by bridging between different AS and providing alternative routes in case of failures [2]. Second, routing overlays can implement interdomain performance management when choosing appropriate intermediary...

Inter-domain policy violations in multi-hop overlay routes: Analysis and mitigation

The Internet is a complex structure arising from the interconnection of numerous autonomous systems (AS), each exercising its own administrative policies to reflect the commercial agreements behind the interconnection. However, routing in service overlay networks is quite capable of violating these policies to its advantage. To prevent these violations, we see an impending drive in the current ...

Work in Progress: Detecting Triangle Inequality Violations in Internet Coordinate Systems by Supervised Learning

Internet Coordinates Systems (ICS) are used to predict Internet distances with limited measurements. However the precision of an ICS is degraded by the presence of Triangle Inequality Violations (TIVs). Simple methods have been proposed to detect TIVs, based e.g. on the empirical observation that a TIV is more likely when the distance is underestimated by the coordinates. In this paper, we appl...

Exploiting Internet Delay Space Properties for Sybil Attack Mitigation

Recent studies have discovered that the Internet delay space has many interesting properties such as triangle inequality violations (TIV), clustering structures, and constrained growth. Understanding these properties has so far benefited the design of network models and network-performance-aware systems. In this paper, we consider an interesting, previously unexplored connection between Interne...
